A Greek football fan has been stabbed to death during a brawl between supporters of AEK Athens and Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb.
A 29-year-old Greek fan has died after overnight clashes between rival supporters in Athens, with European governing soccer body UEFA announcing it has postponed a Champions League qualifying game scheduled for Tuesday because of the violence. After the fan’s death, Greek authorities had requested that all supporters should be excluded from the match between AEK Athens and Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb at the Opap Arena. Dinamo fans were officially already excluded under a previous ruling by UEFA. Eight fans were injured in the clashes outside AEK’s stadium while Greek police said on Tuesday they had made 88 arrests, mostly of Croatian supporters.

The second leg in Croatia will take place as scheduled next Tuesday 15 August but the Athens clash has now been rearranged for Saturday 19 August which technically makes it the second game between the two sides. According to Greek police, the clashes began after Dinamo had finished a pre-game training session at the venue in Nea Philadelphia. The scenes required an armed escort for the team while a preliminary investigation has started to identify those responsible. At least 100 Dinamo fans were present and clashed with AEK supporters gathered nearby with both using flares, homemade projectiles, stones and even makeshift clubs.
