How to Calculate Board Feet – Simple Guide for Woodworkers

Hi everyone,

If you work with lumber, knowing how to calculate board feet is essential. A board foot is a unit of volume representing a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long. Calculating it helps estimate material needs and avoid waste.

Manual Formula:

Board Feet = (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) ÷ 12

For example, a board 2 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 10 feet long equals:

2 × 6 × 10 ÷ 12 = 10 board feet

You can also use an online Board Feet Calculator to save time and get accurate results for multiple boards.
